A Sumba sandalwood horse riding tour is a guided sunset ride on the island’s native Sandalwood ponies along a West or East Sumba beach, lasting one to two hours. The Sandalwood pony is Sumba’s own breed, named after the timber that once left the same harbours. Most stand around 12 to 13 hands, so you sit low to the sand and first-timers feel steady. These are the horses that carry Pasola riders each February and March: sure-footed on wet sand, calm around waves.

Drive times are indicative: the newly paved highway crosses the island in under four hours according to the 2026 Lombok-Sumba-Sumbawa investment report, but beach tracks are still dirt. TransNusa’s direct Denpasar-Waingapu flights (announced June 2026) let East Sumba rides skip the overland transfer.
Beginner or experienced rider: which option should you pick?
- Never ridden: a one-hour walk-only ride, guide on a lead rope for the first stretch. At NIHI, a one-hour lesson (quoted on request) before the beach ride pays off.
- Ridden a few times: 1-1.5 hours, walk and trot on firm sand, guide riding alongside.
- Experienced: canter sections along the tide line, NIHI’s two-hour Bush to Beach trail, or the open savannah at Puru Kambera.
- Children: stables set their own minimum age. Walk only, led by a guide, helmet non-negotiable.
What are the safety and helmet rules?
Law No. 18 of 2025, effective 29 October 2025, and Regulation 6/2025 tightened licensed-guide and adventure-safety standards; we route rides only to stables under a licensed partner.
- Helmets: NIHI’s public price sheets do not state a helmet policy, and village stables frequently carry none. Our partner condition is one helmet per rider, sourced before we confirm. If you own a riding helmet, bring it.
- Rider weight: published weight caps for Sandalwood ponies are not public as of 2026. Send your weight and height when you enquire and we confirm suitability before you pay.
- Tides and light: the guide rides the firm, falling-tide sand. Closed shoes, long trousers. Rides end at dusk, never in the dark.
- Drones: guidance updated January 2026 requires 30 m from people, daylight only, never over villages or ritual grounds.
- Insurance and health: travel insurance with equestrian cover; Hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus protection recommended. We are not an insurer.
When is the best light window?
Sunset on Sumba (WITA) moves only about forty minutes across the year: around 17:50-18:00 from June to August, roughly 18:25-18:30 from December to February. Stables mount riders 75-90 minutes beforehand so the last forty minutes are ridden in low, gold light.
- May to October (dry season): firm sand, clear horizons, the most reliable colour. Prime time.
- Mid-February to mid-March (Pasola window): village horses are in demand for the jousts, so book two to three weeks ahead. The 2026 Kodi schedule was only announced on 21 January; future dates are estimates.
- November to April: afternoon cloud can flatten the light; a sunrise ride is the honest backup.
How does booking work?
- Message the concierge on WhatsApp with dates, lodge, number of riders, riding level, and each rider’s weight and height.
- Quote within 24 hours: written, with sunset time, tide note, transfer plan and helmet confirmation. NIHI guests get help pre-booking the resort programme, which sells out in peak weeks.
- Confirm with a deposit. The confirmation names the partner stable, guide, meeting point and inclusions. Nothing is booked on a verbal price.
- Reconfirmation the day before, with pickup adjusted to that day’s sunset and tide.
- Ride, then settle extras on the spot: village entry permits, tips, added photography time.
What is included, and what is billed separately?
Included in a local-stable ride: pony, licensed guide, helmet on our partner condition, private 4×4 return transfer, bottled water.
Billed separately: lodge nights at each property’s published tariff plus tax and service; NIHI programme charges, billed to your room; village entry permits at villages such as Ratenggaro; the roughly 10% accommodation-based tourism levy reported effective 1 January 2026.

Can beginners with no riding experience join a sunset horse ride on Sumba?
Yes. Sandalwood ponies are small and calm, and beginner rides are walk-only with the guide holding a lead rope for the first stretch. One hour is the right length for a first ride. Tell the concierge you are new so the stable assigns its quietest pony and an experienced guide.
Do I need to stay at NIHI Sumba to ride its sandalwood horses?
As of 2026, NIHI’s equine programme is priced on its guest price list and there is no evidence non-guests can book it. If you are based at Lelewatu, Cap Karoso or a Waingapu hotel, Indonesia Juara Trip arranges an equivalent sunset ride with a vetted local stable on the nearest beach instead.
Are helmets provided on Sumba beach horse rides?
Not reliably. NIHI’s public price sheets do not state a helmet policy, and many village stables carry none.
