Rato priests fix future dates after the Nyale readings, typically one to two weeks ahead. If Pasola is the point of the trip, Southwest + West is the only pairing that can absorb a date shift, because both fields sit within a morning’s drive of either lodge.
The second is the dry season. East Sumba’s hills turn gold roughly from May to October and green after the rains, and Tanggedu is easier to reach when the road is dry. Vehicle tier is the biggest lever on the land price, and it matters most on the East side, where distances are longest. On a Southwest + West trip the standard car is usually enough.
Which pairing mistakes cost a full day?
- Flying TMC in and out, then adding Tanggedu. That is the crossing twice, about eight hours of road for one waterfall.
- One night at a top-tier Wanokaka villa to “see both sides”. The night is spent checking in and out. Give West three nights or none.
- Pairing Southwest with East. The two far ends of the island, five to six hours apart, with the lodge tier skipped in the middle.
