Four days is enough for one side of Sumba, not the whole island. A 4D3N guided tour comfortably covers West and Southwest Sumba with a single lodge switch, or West Sumba alone at a slow pace. East Sumba’s ikat villages and Tanggedu waterfall need a separate trip or a longer itinerary.
Sumba is roughly 11,000 square kilometres with two airports at opposite ends. Pick a side and four days feel generous. Try to see both and you spend the trip looking at a headrest.
Why does the flight schedule decide what four days can hold?
Wings Air and NAM Air fly Bali to Tambolaka (TMC) daily in about 90 minutes as of 2026. Schedules shift by season, so no itinerary should hardcode a departure time. In practice a 4D3N trip gives you two full days and two half days on the ground.
Day 1 is an arrival afternoon. Day 4 is a morning that ends at check-in. Everything else has to fit inside the 48 hours between.
Geography does the rest. NIHI Sumba at Hoba Wawi and Lelewatu, both in Wanokaka, West Sumba, sit roughly 90 minutes to two hours from Tambolaka on an indicative basis. Cap Karoso on Karoso Beach in Kodi is about 50 minutes from the airport by the resort’s own estimate. How many hours will you spend in the 4×4 each day?
Drive time decides whether four days feel relaxed or rushed. Roads west of Waikabubak improved sharply after the 2026 highway work, but the last stretches to villages and waterfalls stay rough. Treat every figure below as indicative.

Route A front-loads the driving on Days 2 and 3, fine for adults but long for children under eight. Route B keeps every day under four hours and buys a lodge morning, which is the point of paying NIHI or Lelewatu rates. On Route A, a luxury-tier 4×4 with cooler box and Wi-Fi earns its premium on Day 3.
What is the one experience most travellers regret skipping?
Lapopu waterfall.
It is the stop guides quietly offer to cut. It sits inside Manupeu Tanah Daru national park, its access track is the roughest of the trip, and it swallows two to three hours of Day 2. When a lodge morning competes for the same slot, Lapopu loses.
Then the photos at the next dinner table show a tiered cascade dropping into a green pool, and it is too late. Lapopu has no equivalent on the Kodi side and cannot be bolted onto the Day 4 airport run.
Keep Lapopu. Cut the Waikabubak market instead if Day 2 needs air.
How should you decide between the two routes?
Work through this list before asking for a quote. Each answer pushes you toward A or B.
- Arrival time. A morning landing makes Route A comfortable. An afternoon landing shrinks Day 1 to a transfer and a sunset, which suits Route B.

- Drones and paperwork. Guidance updated in January 2026 keeps recreational drones 15 km from airports, 30 m from people, daylight only, and never over villages or ritual grounds, so Ratenggaro and Praijing are off any flight plan. Four days, then, is enough for a complete West or West-plus-Kodi story with one lodge or two. It is not enough for the whole island.

Can I stay at both NIHI Sumba and Cap Karoso within four days?
Yes, with one switch. Two nights at NIHI Sumba in Wanokaka followed by one night at Cap Karoso in Kodi is the standard Route A pattern. The transfer between them, with Ratenggaro and Weekuri Lagoon on the way, takes most of Day 3. Is 4 days enough for Sumba if I want to see Pasola?
