Stay at NIHI Sumba all week when the resort is the point: villa, beach, horses, Spa Safari. Explore the whole island when Sumba’s four regions matter more than the room. Most seven-night guests settle on a hybrid, three lodge nights in Wanokaka plus four guided 4×4 days, and pay for each part as a separate line.
What does each week actually give you, day by day?
A resort-only week keeps you at one address, Hoba Wawi in Wanokaka, West Sumba. A guided overland week, the shape of our week-long luxury overland tour, treats the lodge as a base you leave after breakfast and swap for another once that region is done.
| Day | Resort-only week at NIHI | Guided overland week |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fly Bali–Tambolaka (about 90 minutes), road transfer of roughly 60–90 minutes, check-in | Fly Bali–Tambolaka, meet guide and 4×4, Kodi coast: Weekuri Lagoon, Mandorak, Ratenggaro |
| 2 | Beach, surf or pool; sunset ride on the resort’s sandalwood horses | Praijing megaliths and Lapopu waterfall; lodge night in Wanokaka |
| 3 | Spa Safari trek to the resort’s spa site | Wanokaka beaches, sunset horse ride on the sand |
| 4 | Resort-arranged village or waterfall outing | Cross-island drive via Central Sumba to Waingapu (under four hours on the new highway, indicative) |
| 5 | Pool, lessons, private dinner | Tanggedu waterfall and Wairinding hills, East Sumba |
| 6 | Free day, on-property dining | Prailiu and Rende ikat royal villages, Walakiri mangrove sunset |
| 7 | Transfer to TMC, fly out | Depart Waingapu (WGP) if the direct Denpasar link fits, or drive back to TMC |
The trade is simple. The resort week gives you one shoreline seven times, deeply. The overland week gives you four regions once each, with two or three lodge changes and several hundred kilometres of road.
How does the cost structure differ?
A resort week is a nightly rate multiplied by seven. An overland week is a per-person land price plus lodge nights bought separately. Most guests misjudge it by comparing a nightly figure with a package figure.
NIHI Sumba villa rates are quoted on request for the specific villa, dates, length of stay and guest count, and its official rate conditions state that all rates exclude a 21% government tax and service charge. A resort week is that nightly rate for seven nights plus the 21%, for the room alone, before flights or a single outing. Promotional offers are subject to availability at time of booking.
The land-only side works differently. Guided Sumba circuits are priced per person and quoted on request for the specific itinerary, dates, duration, group size and inclusions. Every total is a quote until the lodges are verified.
| Cost line (as of 2026, subject to change) | Resort-only week | Guided overland week |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 7 nights at published villa rate + 21% tax and service | 6 lodge nights at each property’s published tariff + tax and service, booked separately |
| Guide and vehicle | Resort transfers; outings billed per activity | Inside the land price; luxury-tier 4×4 with cooler box and Wi-Fi or standard comfort, quoted on request for your route and dates |
| Accommodation levy | Roughly 10%, reported effective 1 January 2026 | Same, at each lodge |
Lodge nights are never inside the land-only price, so nobody mistakes a tour price for the cost of a week.
What does the hybrid split look like?
Three lodge nights plus four touring days is the split we quote most often for seven nights. It works because NIHI and Lelewatu both sit in Wanokaka, so the resort stretch and the West Sumba touring stretch share one coast.
A typical 3 + 4 shape (drive times indicative):
- Days 1–3, lodge in Wanokaka. Arrive TMC, transfer of about 60–90 minutes to NIHI or Lelewatu. Ride, surf, spa. NIHI runs its own equine programme, so the sunset ride belongs to this block.
- Day 4, guide and 4×4 collect you at the lodge. Praijing, Lapopu waterfall, Waikabubak market; night in a Wanokaka boutique villa.
- Day 5, Kodi coast. Weekuri Lagoon, Mandorak and Pero beaches, Ratenggaro at sunset. Cap Karoso on Karoso Beach is the premium-boutique option here, about 50 minutes from TMC by the resort’s own estimate.
- Day 6, cross to East Sumba. Central Sumba megaliths on the way, Walakiri mangroves at sunset, night in Waingapu.
- Day 7, Prailiu and Rende ikat villages, then depart WGP or return to TMC.
Honest trade-offs:
- You pay two structures at once: three resort nights at published tariff plus 21%, a 4D3N-class land price quoted per person on request, plus three further lodge nights at their own tariffs.
- Day 4 is a jolt. Leaving a villa for a 4×4 after three idle days feels abrupt, so many guests flip the order: tour first, then collapse into the resort.
- The East Sumba leg is a long day either way. If Tanggedu waterfall matters, add an eighth day or drop Kodi.
- Resort outings and guided outings overlap on the West Sumba beaches. Decide which block owns the horse ride so you do not buy it twice.
Which option should you choose?
- Honeymoon, first Sumba visit: resort-only week. Seven days is enough to feel the property.
- Second visit, or Bali’s resort circuit already done: guided overland week. You see Sumba rather than a beach on Sumba.
- Photographers, textile collectors, Pasola travellers: hybrid or full overland. Rende and Prailiu are in the east; Pasola rides in Wanokaka, Lamboya, Gaura and Kodi. A resort week reaches at most one of those.
- Families with children under eight: resort-only, or a hybrid with touring kept to West Sumba.
- Groups of four or more sharing one 4×4: overland economics improve fast, because the land price is per person while the vehicle is shared.
When does timing tip the decision?
Pasola changes everything for February and March. The 2026 Kodi schedule announced by RRI on 21 January 2026 ran three fields on 9–11 February and three more on 9–11 March; Wanokaka and Lamboya usually ride in February, Gaura and Kodi in March. Rato priests fix the dates after the Nyale sea-worm readings, typically only 1–2 weeks ahead, so treat any future date as an estimate. If Pasola is the reason you are coming, the hybrid wins: sleep in Wanokaka, drive to whichever field is riding that week.
Flights matter too. Wings Air and NAM Air fly Bali–Tambolaka daily at roughly 90 minutes as of 2026, and TransNusa announced direct Denpasar–Waingapu service four times weekly in June 2026, which makes an arrive-TMC, depart-WGP week possible without doubling back. Schedules change; we confirm them at quote time. Dry season is prime for both; wet months slow the waterfall roads and hand the resort week the edge.
One plain note on who we are. Indonesia Juara Trip arranges the guide, the 4×4 and the routing; we do not own NIHI, Lelewatu or Cap Karoso. Lodge nights are booked at each property’s published tariff, availability is confirmed by the property, and the properties are accommodation options rather than partners. Guide licensing follows Law No. 18 of 2025, effective 29 October 2025, and Regulation 6/2025.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I book NIHI Sumba through the tour, or must I book the resort directly?
Both routes exist. We can request lodge nights at NIHI’s published tariff on your behalf through vetted licensed partners, or you book directly and we time the guided days around your check-in and check-out. Either way the nightly rate plus 21% tax and service sits outside the land-only tour price, and availability is confirmed by the property.
Is three nights at NIHI enough before starting the overland tour?
Three nights is the minimum that feels like a stay rather than a stopover: one arrival evening, two full days for a horse ride and the Spa Safari, then a morning departure. Guests who want the surf break or a second ride usually stretch to four nights and shorten the touring block to three days, dropping the East Sumba crossing.
Does exploring the whole island mean giving up luxury lodges?
No. West Sumba nights stay at NIHI or Lelewatu, the Kodi night can be Cap Karoso, and Waingapu’s better hotels sit a tier below the western resorts. The compromise is one or two nights in properties below resort standard on the eastern leg, which is why the hybrid keeps its resort nights in the west.
