How hard are the trails, and where is it safe to swim?

- Lapopu. A tiered cascade of roughly 90 metres over limestone steps, reached by a flat footpath suitable for most ages. Swim in the lower pools at the edges only; the main plunge basin recirculates strongly after rain. Flows year-round, fullest December to April, clearest June to September.
- Matayangu. A single tall drop into a deep green pool inside primary forest, reached from the Waimanu village trailhead. The trek crosses the river several times and climbs on the return, so closed trail shoes and reasonable fitness are required. Swimming is fine in the dry season; in the wet the pool rises fast and the guide may hold the group at the viewpoint. Best February to June.
- Waimarang. A short, steep descent to a turquoise pool ringed by rock ledges. Deep enough to swim; ledge jumping is popular but entirely at your own risk and only after the guide has checked depth. Clearest June to October, when the flow thins to a curtain.
