Southwest Sumba Luxury Tour: Kodi, Cap Karoso, Weekuri

A Southwest Sumba luxury tour is a private guide-and-4×4 circuit of the Kodi coast, based at Cap Karoso on Karoso Beach, about 50 minutes from Tambolaka airport. It covers Weekuri Lagoon, Mandorak and Pero beaches, Ratenggaro and Wainyapu villages, and the Kodi Pasola fields each February-March. Pricing is quoted on request for your dates, module, party size and inclusions.

Southwest Sumba is the regency of Sumba Barat Daya; Kodi is its western tip. It is the one part of the island where a luxury lodge, a swimmable lagoon, surf beaches and two of Sumba’s most photographed megalithic villages sit inside one day’s driving radius.

Sumba Luxury Tour is operated by Indonesia Juara Trip. We arrange the licensed guide, the vehicle and the lodge booking; we do not own Cap Karoso, and lodge nights are billed at the resort’s published tariff plus tax and service.

What does a Southwest Sumba luxury tour include?

  • Private English-speaking guide licensed under Law No. 18 of 2025 (in force since 29 October 2025) and Regulation 6/2025.
  • Dedicated 4×4 with driver. Standard-comfort cars with driver and luxury-tier vehicles with cooler box and onboard Wi-Fi are quoted on request, and your choice moves the land-only price.
  • Airport meet at Tambolaka (TMC). Wings Air and NAM Air fly Bali-Tambolaka daily; a Tambolaka-Labuan Bajo link (Tuesday, Friday, Sunday) started in July 2026. Schedules change, so we confirm flights at quote stage.
  • Village protocol handled: sirih-pinang offerings, elder greetings and permit payments.
  • Lodge base at Cap Karoso, Karoso Beach, Kodi, roughly 50 minutes from TMC by the resort’s own estimate.

Where does the 4×4 go on the Kodi coast?

Drive times are planning estimates from Cap Karoso. A newly paved highway crosses Sumba in under four hours, according to the 2026 Lombok-Sumba-Sumbawa investment report, but Kodi’s coastal spurs remain tarmac, gravel and sand.

Stop What you do there Indicative drive Fees and notes (2026)
Weekuri Lagoon Tidal saltwater lagoon swim, best near high tide 30-50 min Small local entry contribution, itemised on your quote
Mandorak Beach Twin white-sand coves between limestone headlands; picnic lunch 30-50 min Same road as Weekuri; combine in one morning
Pero Beach Fishing village, sunset, Kodi’s surf breaks in season 30-60 min Watch from the sand unless you are an experienced surfer
Ratenggaro Sumba’s tallest peaked roofs and headland tombs 45-75 min Village permit applies; no drones
Wainyapu Sister village across the river mouth; 2026 Pasola venue 5-15 min from Ratenggaro Permit as above; Pasola day means a dawn start
Kodi Pasola fields Homba Kalayo, Bondo Kawango, Rara Winyo, Maliti Bondo Ate, Waiha, Wainyapu 20-60 min by field February-March only

Which module should you book: 3D2N or 5D4N?

Both modules sleep at Cap Karoso every night. The 3D2N is a coast-and-villages sampler; the 5D4N adds a full Pero day, a second lagoon visit at a better tide, and a day east to Praijing village and Lapopu waterfall.

Module Day-by-day outline Land-only price per person Lodge nights
3D2N Southwest Sampler D1 TMC, check-in, Pero sunset. D2 Weekuri and Mandorak, then Ratenggaro and Wainyapu. D3 resort morning, TMC. Quote on request 2 nights at Cap Karoso’s current tariff plus tax and service
5D4N Southwest Complete D1 arrival, Pero. D2 Weekuri and Mandorak at high tide. D3 Ratenggaro, Wainyapu, Kodi weaving hamlets. D4 Praijing and Lapopu (park entry applies). D5 free morning, TMC. Quote on request 4 nights, quoted after availability is verified
Pasola add-on (Feb-Mar) Swaps one village day for a dawn Pasola field visit and guide-negotiated viewing spot On request; expect a larger village contribution Book 3-6 months ahead; Pasola weeks sell out

Land-only covers guide, driver, 4×4, fuel and airport transfers; it excludes lodge nights, most meals, permits and taxes. Every total is a quote until Cap Karoso confirms the room.

What taxes, permits and fees apply in Southwest Sumba?

These 2026 figures appear on every quote as separate lines and are subject to change.

Item Amount (2026) When it applies
Accommodation-based tourism levy About 10%, reported effective 1 January 2026 Added to lodge nights by the property

Two rules travellers miss: recreational drones (guidance updated January 2026) must stay 15 km from airports and 30 m from people, fly only in daylight and never over villages or ritual grounds, which rules out Ratenggaro; and Hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus protection is recommended, because Kodi is a long way from a hospital.

When is the best season for the Kodi coast?

Dry season, roughly May to October, gives the calmest lagoon conditions and reliable coastal tracks. The same southwest-facing coast picks up its best surf in that swell window, so Pero is livelier from May through September; when swell is up, swim at Weekuri or Mandorak rather than open beaches.

Pasola is the other prime window. Rato ritual priests set the dates after the Nyale sea-worm readings, usually confirming only one to two weeks ahead; Wanokaka and Lamboya run in February, Gaura and Kodi in March. The official 2026 Kodi schedule, announced by RRI on 21 January 2026 at Kampung Mbuku Bhani, ran Homba Kalayo, Bondo Kawango and Rara Winyo on 9-11 February, then Maliti Bondo Ate, Waiha and Wainyapu on 9-11 March; Indahnesia.id gave the wider 2026 window as 15 February to 15 March. Any 2027 date is an estimate until the priests confirm it.

How does booking work?

  1. Send a Southwest quote request on WhatsApp with dates, party size and preferred module.
  2. We check Cap Karoso availability with the resort, plus Kodi alternatives if your dates are full. Nothing is priced until a room is confirmed.
  3. You receive an itemised quote: land-only price, lodge nights at published tariff plus tax and service, permits and airport tax, each on its own line.
  4. A deposit secures guide, 4×4 and lodge. Flights are booked separately or by us at cost, with current airline timings confirmed then.
  5. Pre-trip briefing a week out: Weekuri tide times, village dress protocol, drone rules and, in February-March, confirmed Pasola dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Southwest Sumba luxury tour cost for 5D4N?

The land-only 5D4N price is quoted on request for your dates, vehicle class, group size and season, covering guide, driver, 4×4 and transfers. Add four nights at Cap Karoso at the resort’s published tariff plus tax and service, permits and the airport tax. The total is a quote until the room is confirmed.

How far is Cap Karoso from Tambolaka airport?

Cap Karoso states it is about 50 minutes from Tambolaka (TMC), and that matches our planning figure, though road works and wet-season conditions can stretch it. Your driver meets you at arrivals with the 4×4, so the transfer doubles as a first orientation drive along the Kodi coast.

Should I stay at Cap Karoso or NIHI Sumba for a Southwest tour?

For Kodi’s lagoons, Ratenggaro and the Pasola fields, Cap Karoso is the practical base because it sits inside the region. NIHI Sumba is at Hoba Wawi in Wanokaka, West Sumba, a separate regency and a longer daily drive. Guests wanting both usually split a 7D6N itinerary, which we quote as two modules with one inter-lodge transfer.

When is surf season on the Southwest Sumba beaches?

The dry-season swell window from about May to September brings the most consistent surf to the Kodi coast around Pero, when offshore trade winds groom the southwest-facing breaks. Forecasts are indicative and the beaches are unpatrolled, so non-surfers should swim at Weekuri Lagoon or Mandorak instead. Wet-season months from November to March are rougher for coastal tracks.
